I dig the teal man. Your truck looks good.

That’s a bad ass Blue. I respect your priorities though.

I havent been on Oppo Much lately. But Ive had this swap planned for a very long time

I might go a bit darker but I was kinda thinking of using this blue:
Mainly because Cayman Green is just so damn difficult to get a hold of. I dunno if you saw my post from when I first obtained the explorer bumper but I had to go to 3 or 4 different advanced autos to get enough paint for the project. It was mislabeled in their computer as red too. Also Ford discontinued production of the paint back in 2001

Check out Ford Sonic Blue. Love that color

Still wondering how you like the ranger more than the XJ.
![]() 10/11/2016 at 02:19 |

10 words: I Beam Front Suspension, Limited Slip differential, Body on frame.
Aka all things the XJ is not

What? I couldn’t hear you over that sexy ass truck!
Blues are a bear. More expensive than Red to mix and as hard to shoot consistently as Silver.
I’m really just happy you haven’t given up on the Ranger.

That Flame Blue is a great color.

paint it more brown

Have you looked to see if you can just buy the car that you want, already running? This engine swap will be a yuge, yuge undertaking.
That blue is a great choice, though. Definitely do that.

Do it.

But that teal or green on Ranger looks so good and has that sleeper vibe to it.

Five link front axle is pretty good, better than I-beam imo, Limited slips are available from factory, and unibody’s where it’s at. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either lying or grossly misinformed.

Why not just wrap it? Much cheaper and you’ll have more money for a long travel suspension.

Actually it isnt going to be as huge as it seems. I can get Hvac, inner fender wells (theyre plastic), fluid resivoirs, etc from a 98-01 explorer/mountaineer and reman engines and transmissions are roughly $3500-$4500 for all together. I can use a 4.0 ranger radiator and 93 fox body convertible motor mounts. The only thing Im really worried about is fitting the trans under the cab, other than that it should bolt right up. Keep in mind the ranger is based on the same platform as the explorer which got a v8 option

I prefer the rigidity of the BOF platform when it comes to handling and the I beam is insanely stable at speed. Ive taken 180 degree highway onramps in my ranger at 45+ mph and it felt insanely planted. The XJ felt like the bottomside wanted topside when I tried it

I cam back this up. I’ve driven a 2016 4Runner and a 2016 Nissan Rouge. The T4R felt much more planted while the Rouge wanted to flip.

Paint’s not a fun project.
Anything resembling a half decent job cost too much (Especially if you do all the inners, Gonna take the box off and paint the cab back and front of the box? Fresh paint makes owning/ caring for nice paint way too much work.
I work in a body shop, Most people don’t understand the cost involved.

As someone who has swapped an engine before (Miata, a straight swap from a low mileage donor, because the original was blown), good luck. Make sure to take your time when disconnecting everything, and keep you nut, bolts, etc in labeled plastic baggies. I drove the Miata with 1 less transmission bolt than it was supposed to have, because I didn’t baggie it.

Blue itttt!!!!

That has more to do with the suspension than anything.

There is no known universe where a body-on-frame car has more structural rigidity than a unibody car, especially a Ranger that has an open channel frame along the entire length of the vehicle. The XJ has a lot of body roll without proper sway bars, which help a lot. I was violating laws of physics with my uprated sway bars and HD springs in my XJ.

Just like how I want to swap a Cummins I-6 into my old ZJ. . . .Save your money man, engine swaps become money pits. They always become more expensive than what you think.
That kind of money goes a long way towards school or a house.

Sounds like you’re on a quest to build the world’s most expensive $4,000 car.

If you think a BOF Ranger is more rigid than a unibody XJ, guess I can’t really argue with you anymore... The XJ’s five-link was complemented for better handling than most ifs vehicles when it came out. Considering the XJ has better ground clearance, it’s no surprise it rolls a little more through the corners, but any extra “plantedness” will be down to the Ranger’s longer wheelbase not wanting to change direction as quickly. Compared to my MJ the XJ definitely feels like it wants to pick up the front end a lot more if I hammer it, but the XJ’s suspension is almost as trashed as the MJ’s, so it’s obvious there’s improvement to be had.

You can just get a Foxbody for $3500-$4500 and have something fun to drive
![]() 10/11/2016 at 10:08 |
|
It’s a truck. How much handling do you really need?
![]() 10/11/2016 at 11:07 |
|
For 3500-4500 you could just buy a decent fox body mustang. Or a full size v8 truck if that’s your thing.
(I’ve owned an 86 2.9 ranger an 87 2.3. I love rangers, power just isn’t their thing. And if you do it, kudos, but then it’s still a ranger)

At least compare cars that are in the same class
